Not every challan can go to Lok Adalat. Each State Legal Services Authority publishes its own list before each sitting, but the general rule is the same across India: minor, compoundable offences are usually eligible, serious offences are not.
Usually eligible
- Over-speeding (camera challans)
- Jumping a red light
- Not wearing a helmet or seat belt
- Wrong parking and no-parking violations
- Driving without carrying documents
- Pollution certificate (PUC) not valid
Usually not eligible
- Drunk driving
- Hit-and-run or accidents causing injury or death
- Driving by a minor (juvenile driving)
- Use of a vehicle in a crime
- Challans already pending in another court for a different reason
- Challans from another state may need that state's Lok Adalat
How to be sure
